Ok, so this news maybe a bit old now, but the C651 classic engines are walking into history. The first train has officially done its refurbishment (217/218) and what it is left with now is just its test on the main line. Expected to begin running from mid-2017, we can expect a lot from it, but what can we see that is different from all other trains?
Better service is a must, that is an of course. Looking at this, I really miss the red-white-red livery.

So now I am going to list down the things that will be swapped out upon refurbishment
- Traction Control for the Vehicle
- Original: GTO-VVVF (Siemens)
- Refurbishment: IGBT-VVVF Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) (Toshiba)
- The Emergency Communication Button
- Current Design:
- Button at the top, next to STARIS Information Board
- Microphone at the height of about 1.6m
- New Design
- All-in-one Button and Microphone together at height of 1.6m
- Similar to all other train models
- SMRT Active Route Information System
- Original Map above train doors to be removed and replaced with STARIS 2.0
- STARIS 2.0 will be able to inform commuters with more information
- Addition of 2 places designated for PIWs
- Resignalling Project
- Original signalling to be changed to a full THALES SELTRAC signalling system
- Doors
- Original Pnuematic Doors to be replaced with electric doors
